It’s the time of year where we take pride in being generous, giving gifts, and feeling grateful for what and who’ve we’ve got. The season of thanks goes on through an annual event, Giving Tuesday, where we say “thanks!” to those organizations that work all year to do good in our communities, and today is 2021’s edition of the special day.
Check out your favorite non-profits, charities, and community organizations on social media today, and you’ll likely see a way to give thanks, plus a story or anecdote about how the groups try to do good today and on the other 364 days each year. Below, find a story from the Nebraska Humane Society that was featured recently, and gives an idea of what happens with displaced dogs, homeless cats, and tons of other critters who need a hand.
Take a look at the shelter’s story, find your favorite helpers, and help them help more people and animals in 2021 and beyond. Thanks for giving!
Locked in a dog crate and forgotten. Every rib, hip bone and vertebrae was clearly definable under her skin. So malnourished, law enforcement thought she was dead when they found her.
Then, she moved. And made eye contact.
Somehow, despite it all, her eyes were filled with hope. The officer knew it was a long shot but rushed her to the ER anyway. Her prognosis was not good, but she was alive. They had to try to save this tiny bag of bones.
She was transferred to the Nebraska Humane Society. Her throat muscles were so atrophied she couldn’t keep food down. The NHS medical team was worried about complications with pneumonia. She had sores where her skin had split over her joints. She was given antibiotics, IV nutrition, and a host of other medications to help her weak body fight back. It was touch and go. Just like you, this small, neglected body housed a huge heart. She fought to live with everything she had.
Medical staff and volunteers hand fed her and sat with her outside to bask in the sun. After 3 days, she struggled to her feet, a walking skeleton determined to find the sun…and treats.
Now, after months of diagnostics, medications, scans and special nutrition, she is out of danger. She is in an NHS foster home, receiving so much love and healing care. She still has an uphill battle as she continues to recover but with your help, she is on the mend. Her eyes reflect gratitude, and her sweet personality delights her foster mom. She knows she has been given a second chance because of you.
Your help becomes hope for dogs like Maya. Your donations today, Giving Tuesday, will be matched dollar for dollar to help Maya and her friends at the shelter. Donate here: https://bit.ly/2K8zKo8
